AT&T Internet - Optimize Wi-Fi Performance and Network Speed

Purpose

Use this procedure when a customer wants to improve Wi-Fi coverage, increase internet speeds, reduce network congestion, or optimize home network performance.

Customer Symptoms

Customer reports:

  • Slow Wi-Fi speeds
  • Weak Wi-Fi signal
  • Poor coverage in certain rooms
  • Frequent buffering
  • Lag during gaming
  • Smart devices disconnecting
  • Network congestion
  • Slow performance with multiple devices
  • Inconsistent internet speeds

Understanding Wi-Fi Performance

Wi-Fi performance can be affected by:

  • Gateway placement
  • Building layout
  • Number of connected devices
  • Device capabilities
  • Signal interference
  • Outdated hardware
  • Outdated software and drivers

Optimizing these factors can improve network performance and coverage.

Optimize Gateway Placement

For best performance:

  1. Place the gateway in a central location.
  2. Position the gateway upright.
  3. Place it on an elevated surface such as a shelf or desk.
  4. Keep the front of the gateway facing the primary usage area.
  5. Ensure the gateway is not blocked by furniture or walls.

Avoid Placement Near

  • Cordless phones
  • Bluetooth devices
  • Microwave ovens
  • Large metal objects
  • Heat sources
  • Moisture
  • Excessive dust
  • Extremely cold environments

Improve Coverage with Extenders

If signal strength remains weak:

  1. Install a compatible Wi-Fi extender.
  2. Position the extender between the gateway and weak coverage area.
  3. Verify devices connect to the stronger signal.

Use Wired Connections

Direct Ethernet connections provide the fastest and most reliable performance.

  • Printers
  • Blu-ray players
