Purpose
Use this procedure when a customer wants to enable, disable, or customize Smart Alerts for people, vehicles, packages, and motion events on a Ring camera or doorbell.
Customer Symptoms
Customer wants to:
- Enable Smart Alerts
- Disable Smart Alerts
- Receive Person Detection notifications
- Receive Vehicle Detection notifications
- Receive Package Alerts
- Reduce unwanted motion alerts
- Customize motion recordings
- Create a Package Zone
- Adjust Package Sensitivity
- Control which events trigger notifications and recordings
Requirements
Customer must have:
- A compatible Ring camera or doorbell
- An active Ring subscription
- Smart Alerts supported on the device
Understanding Smart Alerts
Smart Alerts allow customers to customize how Ring responds to motion events.
Customers can choose:
- Notifications only
- Recordings only
- Notifications and recordings
Available detection types may include:
- Person Detection
- Vehicle Detection
- Package Detection
- Other Motion
Enable Smart Alerts
- Open the Ring app.
- Tap the Menu (☰).
- Tap Devices.
- Select the device.
- Tap Motion Settings.
- Tap Smart Alerts.
- Tap Enable Feature.
- Tap Continue.
- Configure preferences for:
- Person
- Vehicle
- Other Motion
- Tap Done.
Modify Smart Alert Settings
- Open Smart Alerts.
- Select the alert category.
- Choose:
- Notifications Only
- Recordings Only
- Notifications and Recordings
- Disabled
- Save changes.
Disable Smart Alerts
- Open the Ring app.
- Tap Devices.
- Select the device.
- Tap Motion Settings.
- Tap Smart Alerts.
- Tap Disable Smart Alerts.
- Tap Disable Feature.
Configure Person Detection
Person Detection helps identify human activity while reducing unnecessary alerts from other motion sources.
Recommended Areas
- Front doors
- Walkways
- Entry points
- Driveways
Person Detection works with Motion Zones and Bird's Eye Zones when supported.
Configure Vehicle Detection
Vehicle Detection notifies customers when vehicles enter selected detection areas.
Recommended Areas
- Driveways
- Garages
- Parking areas
- Streets adjacent to the property
Vehicle Detection uses Motion Zones or Bird's Eye Zones when available.
Configure Package Alerts
Package Alerts notify customers when a package is placed within a designated delivery area.
Enable Package Alerts
- Open the Ring app.
- Tap Devices.
- Select the doorbell.
- Tap Motion Settings.
- Tap Smart Alerts.
- Under Package Zone, tap the Bell icon.
- Tap Turn On Feature.
- Tap Continue.
- Create a Package Zone around the delivery area.
- Tap Done.
- Tap Continue.
Package Alert Notes
- Package Alerts work best with medium and large packages.
- Small envelopes, tubes, food deliveries, and small packages may not always be detected.
- Package Alerts are available on supported Ring doorbells except Peephole Cam.
Adjust Package Zone
- Open Smart Alerts.
- Under Package, tap Customize.
- Select Package Zone.
- Adjust the detection area.
- Save changes.
Adjust Package Sensitivity
- Open Smart Alerts.
- Select Package Sensitivity.
- Adjust the sensitivity level:
- Higher = More package detections
- Lower = Fewer package detections
- Tap Save.
Important
For maximum Package Alert accuracy:
- Set Motion Sensitivity to High
Note: Higher sensitivity may increase battery usage and notifications.
Troubleshooting
Not Receiving Person Alerts
- Verify Smart Alerts are enabled.
- Verify Person Detection is enabled.
- Check Motion Zones.
- Confirm the device is online.
Not Receiving Vehicle Alerts
- Verify Vehicle Detection is enabled.
- Review Motion Zones or Bird's Eye Zones.
- Increase detection coverage if necessary.
Package Alerts Not Working
- Verify Package Alerts are enabled.
- Confirm Package Zone placement.
- Increase Package Sensitivity.
- Verify deliveries occur within the Package Zone.
Too Many Notifications
- Reduce sensitivity.
- Adjust Motion Zones.
- Disable unwanted alert categories.
- Limit notifications to Person Detection only.
Expected Outcome
The customer successfully configures Smart Alerts and receives notifications and recordings for people, vehicles, packages, and motion events based on their preferred settings.
