Answer:

Matter is a smart home standard designed to simplify device setup and allow compatible devices to work across multiple smart home platforms.

SmartThings supports Matter devices using Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Thread networks.

What You Need for Matter

Matter Commissioner

The mobile device running the SmartThings app acts as the Matter Commissioner and performs the setup process.

Matter Controller

A Matter Controller manages Matter devices after they are added.

Supported SmartThings Matter Controllers include:

• SmartThings Hub 2018
• Aeotec Smart Home Hub
• SmartThings Hub 2015 (Wi-Fi Matter devices only)

Note:

Thread-based Matter devices require a Thread Border Router.

Matter Device

Compatible devices display the Matter logo on the packaging and include a Matter QR Code or Setup Code.

Matter Requirements

SmartThings App

• Android SmartThings App 1.7.91 or later
• iOS SmartThings App 1.6.94 or later
• iOS 16.2 or later

Hub Requirements

• SmartThings Hub firmware 45.9 or later

Add a Matter Device

  1. Open the SmartThings app.
  2. Tap Add (+).
  3. Select Add Device.
  4. Scan the Matter QR Code.

Alternative:

Tap Enter Setup Code if you cannot scan the QR code.

  1. Select the Hub and Room.
  2. Wait for pairing to complete.
  3. Select the appropriate Wi-Fi or Thread network if prompted.
  4. Rename the device if desired.
  5. Tap Save.

Share a Matter Device with Other Platforms

Matter Multi-Admin allows a device to be shared between SmartThings and other supported smart home platforms.

To share a Matter device:

  1. Open the Matter device in SmartThings.
  2. Tap More Options (⋮).
  3. Select Share With Other Services.
  4. Select Share Device.
  5. Scan the generated QR code using the third-party platform.
  6. Complete setup in the other platform.

Important:

A Matter device can be shared with up to five supported services.

Use a Third-Party Thread Border Router

SmartThings Hub 2015 owners must use a compatible Thread Border Router to connect Thread-based Matter devices.

Requirements:

• Border Router connected to the same network as SmartThings.
• Thread Network Key available.
• Border Router configured according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Matter Troubleshooting

Matter Device Will Not Pair

  1. Verify a supported Matter Controller is installed.
  2. Confirm the device is in pairing mode.
  3. Ensure the QR Code is readable.
  4. Use the Setup Code if scanning fails.
  5. Restart the device and SmartThings app.
  6. Factory reset the Matter device and retry setup.

Matter Device Cannot Find Wi-Fi or Thread Network

  1. Verify the Matter Controller is online.
  2. Move the device closer to the network source.
  3. Confirm network compatibility.
  4. Restart the controller and device.
  5. Retry onboarding.

Matter Device Is Offline

  1. Verify the device has power.
  2. Check battery levels if applicable.
  3. Confirm the device is within range.
  4. Restart the Matter device.

  6. Restart the Matter Controller.
  7. Remove and re-add the device if necessary.

Important Notes

• Matter devices include a QR Code and Setup Code.

• Devices can be shared across multiple Matter ecosystems.
• A Matter device can only be connected to five services simultaneously.
• SmartThings continues to expand Matter support as new devices become available.
