Overview

Familiar Face Detection allows compatible Google Nest cameras to recognize people who have been added to your Face Library. When enabled, the camera can distinguish between known and unknown individuals and provide more detailed notifications.

Important:

• A Google Home Premium subscription is required.
• Availability may vary by device model and region.
• Before using face recognition features, verify local privacy laws and obtain consent when required.

How Familiar Face Detection Works

When a Nest camera detects a person:

1. The event is recorded in the camera history.
2. The camera compares the face against saved profiles in the Face Library.
3. If a match is found, the person can be identified as a familiar face.
4. If no match is found, the event may be classified as an unknown person.

Familiar Face Library

The Face Library stores face profiles used for recognition.

Home members may be able to:

• Add names to face profiles.
• Review unidentified faces.
• Merge duplicate profiles.
• Delete face profiles.
• Clear the entire Face Library.

Changes made to the Face Library affect all compatible cameras within the same home.

Turn Familiar Face Detection On or Off

Google Home App

1. Open the Google Home app.
2. Tap your Profile Picture.
3. Tap Home Settings.
4. Tap Subscriptions.
5. Tap Google Home Premium.
6. Tap Familiar Face Detection.
7. Enable or disable the feature.

Nest App

1. Open the Nest app.
2. Tap Settings.
3. Tap Familiar Faces.
4. Turn Familiar Face Detection on or off for each camera.

Enable Familiar Face Notifications

Google Home App

1. Open the Google Home app.
2. Select your camera.
3. Tap Settings.
4. Tap Notifications.
5. Tap People.
6. Enable notifications.

Nest App

1. Open the Nest app.
2. Tap Settings.
3. Tap Notifications.
4. Select your camera.
5. Enable People Notifications.

Add or Rename a Face Profile

Google Home App

1. Open Google Home app.
2. Tap Profile Picture.
3. Tap Home Settings.
4. Tap Subscriptions.
5. Tap Google Home Premium.
6. Tap Familiar Face Detection.
7. Select a face profile.
8. Enter or update the name.

Nest App

1. Open Nest app.
2. Tap Settings.
3. Tap Familiar Faces.
4. Select a profile.
5. Tap Name.
6. Enter the desired name.

Identify New Faces

When a camera detects a person not currently in the Face Library, you may be prompted to classify the face.

Possible options include:

• Known Person
• Unknown Person
• Not a Person

Examples of objects that may occasionally be misidentified:

• Photographs
• Artwork
• Television screens
• Pets

Merge Duplicate Face Profiles

If the same person appears in multiple profiles:

1. Open Familiar Face Detection settings.
2. Select the duplicate profiles.
3. Choose Merge.
4. Confirm the merge.

This improves recognition accuracy.

Delete a Face Profile

Deleting a profile removes:

• Stored face information.
• Associated recognition data.
• Saved face snapshots used for identification.

Clear the Entire Face Library

You can remove all saved face profiles from the selected home.

1. Open Familiar Face Detection.
2. Tap Options.
3. Select Delete Face Library.
4. Confirm deletion.

1. Open Familiar Faces.
2. Tap Clear Library.
3. Confirm deletion.

Privacy and Data Storage

Different Nest camera models may store face recognition data differently.

Newer Google Home Cameras

• Face recognition data is stored locally on the device.
• Data is encrypted for security.

Older Nest Cameras

• Face recognition information may be processed through Nest cloud services.
• Data is encrypted to help protect privacy.

Privacy Best Practices

✓ Obtain permission when required.

✓ Review local privacy laws before enabling face recognition.

✓ Limit access to trusted home members.

✓ Regularly review and manage face profiles.

Known Limitations

Familiar Face Detection is not perfect.

Possible inaccuracies include:

• Unknown people identified as familiar.
• Familiar people identified as unknown.
• Similar-looking individuals being confused.
• Poor lighting reducing recognition accuracy.

Age-Based Restrictions
