Overview
Google Home automations and routines rely on triggers, conditions, device status, and account settings to run correctly. If an automation fails to start, runs unexpectedly, or does not control devices as intended, use the troubleshooting steps below.
Home & Away Automation Issues
Devices Do Not Respond to Home or Away Status
If devices fail to react when your home changes between Home and Away modes:
- Verify the device is online.
- Confirm the device is included in the Home or Away automation.
- Verify presence sensing is enabled.
- Confirm location permissions are enabled on household member devices.
- Restart the Google Home app.
- Test Home and Away status manually.

Routine Runs Unexpectedly
A routine may start unexpectedly if:
- Multiple routines use the same trigger.
- A device state change activates another routine.
- Presence sensing changes status.
- Another automation starts the routine.
Troubleshooting
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap Activity.
- Review automation history.
- Identify which trigger started the routine.
- Edit starters, conditions, or actions if needed.
Routine Does Not Start
If a routine never runs:
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap Automations.
- Select the affected routine.
- Verify the routine is enabled.
- Review all starters and conditions.
- Check Activity History for errors.

- Confirm the device supports Google Home automations.
- Confirm the device is online.
- Refresh the Google Home app.
- Re-link the device if necessary.

Available For Routines
Specific Action Fails in a Routine
Sometimes a routine starts but one action fails.
Examples:
- Light does not turn on.
- Volume does not change.
- Media playback does not start.
- Broadcast does not play.
Troubleshooting
- Test the action manually.
- Confirm the device is online.
- Verify the action still works through the Google Home app.
- Review custom commands used in the routine.
- Confirm audio playback devices are available and not muted.
Can't Create or Use Routines
Routine availability depends on supported regions and languages.
Troubleshooting
- Verify your region supports Google Home automations.
- Confirm your phone language is supported.
- Update the Google Home app.
- Wait for settings changes to synchronize.
Advanced Automation Issues
Advanced automations created through the Google Home Script Editor may fail if:
- Device names change.
- Automation code contains errors.
- Device capabilities change after updates.
- Conditions are configured incorrectly.
Troubleshooting
- Validate the automation script.
- Confirm all device names are correct.
- Test each action individually.
- Update automation logic if devices were renamed.

Third-Party Automation Issues
Removing a third-party app may not automatically remove automations created by that app.
Remove Third-Party Automations
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap Automations.
- Select the automation.
- Review the app associated with the automation.
- Delete the automation if no longer needed.
- Remove third-party app access if necessary.
Best Practices
✓ Keep devices online and updated.
✓ Use clear automation names.
✓ Avoid overlapping triggers.
✓ Review Activity History regularly.
✓ Test automations after making changes.
✓ Verify presence sensing and location settings remain enabled.
