Ring Cameras and Doorbells - Configure and Optimize Motion Zones

Purpose

Use this procedure when a customer wants to create, edit, or optimize Motion Zones on a Ring camera or doorbell to improve motion detection and reduce unwanted alerts.

Customer Symptoms

Customer reports:

• Too many motion alerts
• Motion alerts from vehicles
• Motion alerts from sidewalks or streets
• Motion detection missing important activity
• Wants to customize motion detection areas
• Wants to reduce false motion notifications

Configuration Steps

Add a Motion Zone

1. Open the Ring app.
2. Select Menu.
3. Select Devices.
4. Select the desired Ring device.
5. Select Device Settings.
6. Select Motion Settings.
7. Select Camera Motion Zones.
8. Select Add Zone.
9. Drag the boundary points to create the desired zone.
10. Select Save.

Edit an Existing Motion Zone

1. Open the Ring app.
2. Select Menu.
3. Select Devices.
4. Select the desired device.
5. Select Device Settings.
6. Select Motion Settings.
7. Select Edit Zones.
8. Select the zone to modify.
9. Adjust the boundary points.
10. Select Save.

Motion Zone Optimization

Reduce Unwanted Alerts

Review the camera view for:

• Busy streets
• Sidewalk traffic
• Moving trees
• Shadows
• Sunlight reflections
• Mirrors
• Windows

Adjust Motion Zones to exclude these areas when possible.

Exclude Low-Priority Areas

Consider excluding:

• Locked gates
• Hedges
• Walls
• Restricted areas
• Areas with little expected activity

Detection Range Considerations

Most Ring devices detect motion up to approximately 30 feet.

Large moving objects beyond this range may still generate alerts.

Reflective Surface Warning

Reflections from:

• Windows
• Mirrors
• Glass surfaces

may impact motion detection performance.

Advanced Motion Detection

For battery-powered Ring devices:

1. Open Motion Settings.
2. Enable Advanced Motion Detection if available.
3. Save changes.

Troubleshooting Steps

Too Many Motion Alerts

1. Reduce Motion Zone coverage.
2. Exclude roads and sidewalks.
3. Remove reflective surfaces from the field of view if possible.
4. Reposition the device if necessary.

Missing Motion Events

1. Expand Motion Zone coverage.
2. Verify Advanced Motion Detection is enabled.
3. Confirm the device has a clear view of the monitored area.

Motion Zones are configured to monitor important activity areas while reducing unnecessary alerts and false motion notifications.
