Ring Camera and Doorbell - Enable or Disable Color Night Vision

Purpose

Use this procedure when a customer wants to turn Color Night Vision on or off, improve nighttime video quality, or troubleshoot night vision and color video issues on a Ring camera or doorbell.

Customer Symptoms

Customer wants to:

  • Enable Color Night Vision
  • Disable Color Night Vision
  • View nighttime video in color
  • Switch night video to black and white
  • Improve low-light video quality
  • Fix pink video
  • Fix black video
  • Fix distorted night vision
  • Fix night vision appearing during daytime hours
  • Troubleshoot poor nighttime video quality

What Is Color Night Vision?

Color Night Vision enhances video visibility in low-light conditions by displaying nighttime footage in color.

When Enabled

  • Nighttime video appears in color
  • Improved visibility in low-light conditions
  • Better scene detail

When Disabled

  • Nighttime video appears in black and white
  • Standard infrared night vision is used

Enable or Disable Color Night Vision

Adjust Color Night Vision Settings

  1. Open the Ring app.
  2. Tap the Menu (☰).
  3. Tap Devices.
  4. Select the camera or doorbell.
  5. Tap Device Settings.
  6. Tap Video Settings.
  7. Toggle Color Night Vision:
    • On = Color nighttime video
    • Off = Black and white nighttime video
  8. Save changes.

Troubleshooting Night Vision Issues

Pink, Black, or Distorted Video

If video appears:

  • Pink
  • Black
  • Discolored
  • Distorted
  • Stuck in Night Vision during daytime

Perform the following checks.

Check Signal Strength

Weak Wi-Fi connections can impact video performance.

Verify Signal Strength

  1. Open the Ring app.
  2. Tap Menu (☰).
  3. Tap Devices.
  4. Select the device.
  5. Tap Device Health.
  6. Review Signal Strength under Network.

If Signal Strength Is Poor

  1. Move the device closer to the router if possible.
  2. Improve Wi-Fi coverage.
  3. Reduce interference.
  4. Test video quality again.

Reboot the Device

Requirements

The device must be online and connected to Wi-Fi.

Reboot a Ring Camera or Doorbell

  1. Open the Ring app.
  2. Tap Menu (☰).
  3. Tap Devices.
  4. Select the device.
  5. Tap Device Health.
  6. Scroll to Reboot This Device.
  7. Confirm reboot.
  8. Allow several minutes for the device to restart.

Additional Troubleshooting

Night Vision Appears During Daytime

Possible causes:

  • Poor lighting conditions
  • Device positioning
  • Temporary software issue

Recommended actions:

  1. Verify adequate lighting around the camera.
  2. Reboot the device.
  3. Verify strong Wi-Fi signal.
  4. Test again after reboot.

Video Quality Remains Poor

  1. Verify Color Night Vision setting.
  2. Check internet connection quality.
  3. Reboot the device.
  4. Verify device firmware is current.
  5. Test Live View and recorded events.
