SmartThings hubs act as the central controller for your smart home and allow compatible Zigbee, Z-Wave, and LAN-connected devices to communicate with SmartThings.
The SmartThings app is used to add, configure, manage, replace, and remove SmartThings-enabled hubs.
Add a SmartThings Enabled Hub
Before starting:
• Connect power to the hub.
• Place the hub into pairing mode if required.
• Verify the SmartThings app is updated.
To add a hub:
- Open the Devices tab.
- Tap Add (+).
- Choose one of the following methods:
• Scan QR Code
• Scan Nearby
• Add Samsung Device
• Add Partner Device
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Wait for pairing to complete.
- Tap Done.
Add a SmartThings Hub (2015 Model)
For SmartThings Hub 2015:
- Open the Devices tab.
- Tap Add (+).
- Select Samsung Devices.
- Select Smart Home Hub.
- Tap Add Without QR Code.
- Select Can't Find Your Device.
- Choose SmartThings Hub 2015.
- Select a Location and Room.
- Complete setup following the prompts.
Remove a Hub
Warning:
Removing a hub restores factory settings and permanently removes:
• Connected devices
• Routines
• Automations
• Hub configurations
• Associated services
To remove a hub:
- Open Favorites or Devices.
- Tap and hold the hub.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm removal.
Zigbee Hub Settings
Access Zigbee Settings
- Open the hub device.
- Select SmartThings Hub if applicable.
- Tap Manage SmartThings Hub.
- Tap More Options (⋮).
- Select Settings.
Available Settings
Zigbee Secure Mode
• Prevents previously disconnected Zigbee devices from automatically reconnecting.
• Devices may require resetting and re-pairing if connectivity is lost.
Device Firmware Updates
• Automatically updates supported Zigbee devices when firmware becomes available.
Z-Wave Hub Settings
Access Z-Wave Utilities
- Open the hub device.
- Select SmartThings Hub if applicable.
- Tap Manage SmartThings Hub.
- Tap More Options (⋮).
- Select Z-Wave Utilities.
Z-Wave Exclusion
Use exclusion when:
• Devices fail to pair
• Devices were previously connected to another controller
• Pairing repeatedly fails
After enabling exclusion mode:
- Follow the device manufacturer's exclusion process.
- Perform the required button press or reset sequence on the device.
- Wait for exclusion confirmation.
Repair Z-Wave Network
Use Z-Wave Network Repair to improve routing and communication.
- Open Z-Wave Utilities.
- Select Repair Z-Wave Network.
- Wait for the repair process to finish.
Important:
Avoid operating Z-Wave devices during the repair process.
Replace a SmartThings Hub
Supported hubs may allow device and routine migration using Hub Replace.
Requirements
• Updated SmartThings app
• Existing hub online
• Replacement hub added to the same location
Replace a Hub
- Install and add the new hub.
- Open the existing hub.
- Tap More Options (⋮).
- Select Replace Hub.
- Tap Replace This Hub.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Note:
If Replace Hub does not appear, the hub does not support hub replacement.
After replacement is complete, devices may require up to 20 minutes to fully reconnect.
Good to Know
• Hubs are required for most Zigbee and Z-Wave devices.
• Hub removal cannot be undone.
• Some devices may need to be reset before reconnecting.
• Firmware updates help improve device compatibility and reliability.
• Network repairs can improve Z-Wave performance in larger installations.
