Overview

Google Nest cameras and doorbells are designed for specific installation environments. Using a device outside of its intended location may affect performance, reduce reliability, and potentially damage the equipment.

Always install Nest cameras, doorbells, power adapters, and cables according to their intended indoor or outdoor use.

Indoor-Only Cameras

The following Nest camera models are designed for indoor use only:

  • Nest Cam IQ Indoor
  • Nest Cam Indoor
  • Nest Cam Indoor (Wired)

Important

Do not install indoor-only cameras outdoors.

Indoor camera components are not designed to withstand:

  • Rain
  • Snow
  • Excessive humidity
  • Direct weather exposure
  • Outdoor temperature extremes

Using an indoor camera outdoors may result in equipment damage or reduced performance.

Using Outdoor Cameras Indoors

Outdoor-capable cameras can function indoors; however, some features and detection settings may be optimized for outdoor environments.

Potential issues may include:

  • Less accurate motion detection
  • Notification sensitivity differences
  • Placement challenges
  • Reduced effectiveness of certain detection features

For best results, use each camera model in the environment for which it was designed.

Best Practices

✓ Verify whether the device is intended for indoor or outdoor use before installation.

✓ Use the original power adapter and cable supplied with the device.

✓ Follow manufacturer installation recommendations.

✓ Avoid exposing indoor cameras to moisture or direct weather conditions.

✓ Install outdoor cameras in locations with a strong Wi-Fi signal and clear visibility.
