Overview

Rooms help organize smart home devices within the Google Home app. Assigning devices to rooms makes them easier to find, control, and automate.

Examples include:

  • Living Room
  • Kitchen
  • Bedroom
  • Garage
  • Office

You can create, rename, or delete rooms at any time.

Create a New Room

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap Home.
  3. Select All Devices.
  4. Touch and hold the device you want to assign.
  5. Tap Settings.
  6. Select Device Information → Placement.

If Device Information is unavailable, tap Placement directly.

  7. Select an existing room or scroll down.
  8. Tap Add a Custom Room.
  9. Enter a room name.
  10. Save your changes.

Rename a Room

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. If necessary, switch to the correct home.
  3. Tap your Profile Picture or Initial.
  4. Select Home Settings.
  5. Tap Devices, Groups & Rooms.
  6. Select the room you want to rename.
  7. Tap Name.
  8. Enter the new room name.
  9. Tap Save.

Delete a Room

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Switch to the correct home if needed.
  3. Tap your Profile Picture or Initial.
  4. Select Home Settings.
  5. Tap Devices, Groups & Rooms.
  6. Select the room you want to remove.
  7. Tap Delete Room.

What Happens When a Room Is Deleted?

Deleting a room does not remove your devices from Google Home.

Devices assigned to the room will simply become unassigned and can be added to another room at any time.

Tips

  • Use clear room names for easier voice control.
  • Keep devices assigned to the correct room for better automation performance.
  • Review room assignments after adding new devices to your home.
