Overview

You can update the room or location assigned to a Nest device at any time. Room names help organize devices in the Nest app and determine how notifications identify the device location.

You can also add a custom label to distinguish between multiple devices in the same room.

Change a Device Location

  1. Open the Nest app.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Select the device you want to update.
  4. Tap Where or Placement.
  5. Choose one of the available room names.

Examples may include:

  • Living Room
  • Kitchen
  • Bedroom
  • Garage
  • Office
  1. Tap the desired location to save.

Use a Custom Room Name

If the standard room list doesn't fit your space:

  1. Open Where or Placement.
  2. Scroll to the bottom.
  3. Select Custom.
  4. Enter your preferred room name.
  5. Save your changes.

Example: Art Studio, Workshop, Game Room, Theater Room.

Add a Device Label

Labels help identify multiple devices located in the same room.

Example

Room: Bedroom

Labels:

  • Master
  • Guest
  • Upstairs

Notifications may display:

Bedroom (Master)

Bedroom (Guest)

To add a label:

  1. Open the device settings.
  2. Select Label.
  3. Enter a custom label.
  4. Save your changes.

Nest × Yale Lock Location

Nest × Yale Lock includes a Door setting.

  1. Open the lock settings.
  2. Select Door.
  3. Choose a suggested location or select Custom.
  4. Save your changes.

Examples:

  • Front Door
  • Back Door
  • Garage Entry
  • Side Door

Important Notes

  • Room names help organize devices in Spaces View.
  • Notification messages use the assigned location.
  • Custom labels appear in app notifications and emails.
  • Voice announcements from some Nest products may use the closest supported room name instead of a custom room name.
  • Changing a room assignment does not affect device settings or functionality.
