Ring Doorbell - Complete Device Setup and Wi-Fi Configuration

Purpose

Use this procedure when setting up a new Ring Doorbell, reconnecting a Ring Doorbell, or completing initial device configuration in the Ring app.

Customer Symptoms

Customer wants to:

  • Set up a new Ring Doorbell
  • Connect a Ring Doorbell to Wi-Fi
  • Add a Ring Doorbell to their account
  • Reinstall a Ring Doorbell
  • Complete first-time device setup

Requirements

Before starting:

  • Charge the battery if applicable
  • Have Wi-Fi credentials available
  • Install the Ring app
  • Sign into a Ring account

Configuration Steps

Start Device Setup

  1. Open the Ring app.
  2. Select Set Up a Device.
  3. Select Doorbell.

Scan Device QR Code

  1. Locate the QR code on the device.
  2. Scan the QR code using the Ring app.
  3. If scanning fails, use the manual setup option.

Create or Select a Location

  1. Select an existing location or create a new one.
  2. Verify the property address.
  3. Save the location.

Name the Doorbell

  1. Select a preset device name or create a custom name.
  2. Save the device name.

Prepare the Doorbell

For battery-powered models:

  • Charge the battery.
  • Remove protective film.
  • Follow in-app preparation instructions.

For hardwired models:

  • Follow the installation instructions provided in the Ring app.
  • Verify power is connected.

Connect to Ring Setup Network

  1. Press the setup button on the doorbell.
  2. Verify the light begins spinning.
  3. Select Light is Spinning White.
  4. Connect to the temporary Ring setup network.

Connect to Home Wi-Fi

  1. Select the customer's Wi-Fi network.
  2. Enter the Wi-Fi password.
  3. Wait for the connection process to complete.
  4. Allow any firmware updates to finish.

Complete Device Configuration

  1. Follow the remaining setup prompts.
  2. Configure motion settings.
  3. Add Shared Users if desired.
  4. Complete installation instructions if applicable.

Troubleshooting Steps

QR Code Will Not Scan

  1. Verify adequate lighting.
  2. Clean the QR code area.
  3. Use manual setup if necessary.

Cannot Connect to Ring Setup Network

  1. Open mobile device Wi-Fi settings.
  2. Locate the Ring setup network.
  3. Connect manually.
  4. Return to the Ring app.

Cannot Connect to Home Wi-Fi

  1. Verify Wi-Fi password.
  2. Move closer to the router.
  3. Restart the setup process.
  4. Confirm the Wi-Fi network is operational.

Firmware Update Issues

  1. Keep the device powered.
  2. Do not press the setup button.
  3. Allow the update to finish completely.

Expected Outcome

The Ring Doorbell is connected to the customer's Ring account, connected to Wi-Fi, updated to the latest firmware, and ready for normal operation.
