Ring Intercom Video - Video Quality Tuning and Troubleshooting

Purpose

Use this procedure when a customer wants to improve video quality, adjust brightness and contrast, or troubleshoot poor video performance on Ring Intercom Video.

Customer Symptoms

Customer reports:

  • Poor video quality
  • Blurry video
  • Dark video
  • Bright or washed-out video
  • Video not displaying correctly
  • Video quality differs from expectations
  • Wants to adjust brightness or contrast
  • Wants to improve Intercom video performance

Understanding Ring Intercom Video Quality

Ring Intercom Video relies on the building's existing intercom camera system to deliver video to the Ring app.

Video quality depends on:

  • Building intercom camera quality
  • Internet connection quality
  • Mobile data performance
  • Network speed

Ring Intercom Video can match the quality of the existing intercom system but cannot exceed the quality provided by the building's intercom camera.

Requirements

Before adjusting video quality:

  • Verify Ring Intercom Video is compatible with the building's intercom system.
  • Verify internet connectivity is stable.
  • Verify mobile data connection is sufficient when answering calls remotely.
  • Verify the device is properly installed and operational.

Configuration Steps

Adjust Video Quality Presets

  1. Open the Ring app.
  2. Select Devices.
  3. Select Ring Intercom Video.
  4. Open Device Settings.
  5. Select Video Settings.
  6. Select Video Quality Tuning.
  7. Press the building intercom call button to activate video.
  8. Test each available video preset.
  9. Wait approximately 3 seconds after each adjustment.
  10. Select the preset that provides the best image quality.
  11. Select Finish Adjusting.

Important

The building intercom may stop streaming video during adjustments.

If this occurs:

  1. Press the building intercom call button again.
  2. Resume testing video settings.

Adjust Brightness and Contrast

  1. Open the Ring app.
  2. Select Devices.
  3. Select Ring Intercom Video.
  4. Open Device Settings.
  5. Select Video Settings.
  6. Select Brightness and Contrast.
  7. Press the building intercom call button to activate video.
  8. Adjust Brightness as needed.
  9. Adjust Contrast as needed.
  10. Wait approximately 3 seconds after each adjustment.
  11. Select Finish Adjusting.

Troubleshooting Steps

Poor Video Quality

  1. Verify internet connectivity.
  2. Verify mobile data quality if using remote access.
  3. Test all available video presets.
  4. Adjust brightness and contrast settings.
  5. Verify building intercom camera quality.

Video Stops During Adjustment

This may occur during video tuning.

To continue:

  1. Press the building intercom call button.
  2. Reactivate video.
  3. Continue adjustments.

Bright or Washed-Out Video

  1. Open Brightness and Contrast settings.
  2. Reduce brightness if necessary.
  3. Increase contrast if necessary.
  4. Test video quality again.

Dark Video

  1. Open Brightness and Contrast settings.
  2. Increase brightness.
  3. Adjust contrast as needed.
  4. Verify image quality.

Some Settings Are Unavailable

Depending on the building's intercom model, certain video adjustments may not be supported.

Support Preparation

If additional support is required, gather:

  • Photo of the front of the intercom
  • Photo of the internal wiring
  • Photo showing terminal markings
  • Description of the video quality issue

Having this information available may help with troubleshooting.

Expected Outcome

Video quality is optimized using available video presets, brightness and contrast settings are adjusted correctly, and Ring Intercom Video displays the best image quality supported by the building's intercom system.
