Purpose
Use this procedure when a customer wants to customize Ring camera light behavior, adjust motion-activated lighting, create light schedules, change brightness settings, or troubleshoot camera light issues.
Customer Symptoms
Customer wants to:
- Turn camera lights on or off
- Adjust light brightness
- Change light sensitivity
- Configure motion-activated lighting
- Create light schedules
- Edit light schedules
- Delete light schedules
- Adjust motion zones for lights
- Stop lights from turning on unexpectedly
- Fix flickering lights
- Fix dim lights
- Fix lights not activating with motion
Supported Devices
This procedure applies to compatible:
- Ring Floodlight Cameras
- Ring Spotlight Cameras
- Ring Spotlight Cam Plus
- Ring Spotlight Cam Pro
Turn Lights On or Off Manually
- Open the Ring app.
- From the main dashboard, tap the menu (☰).
- Tap the Lightbulb icon.
- Turn the lights on or off as needed.
Access Light Settings
- Open the Ring app.
- Tap the menu (☰).
- Select Device Settings.
- Tap Light Settings.
Configure Motion-Activated Lights
Motion-Activated Lights automatically turn on when motion is detected at night.
Enable or Disable Motion-Activated Lights
- Open Light Settings.
- Select Motion-Activated Lights.
- Toggle the setting On or Off.
- Save changes.
Linked Device Option
Lights can also be triggered by other Ring devices using Linked Devices.
Example:
- Front Door Motion → Garage Floodlight Turns On
Configure Automatic Shut-Off Timer
The Automatic Shut-Off Timer controls how long lights remain on after motion is detected.
Available Settings
- 30 Seconds
- Multiple timed options
- Up to 15 Minutes
Configure Shut-Off Timer
- Open Light Settings.
- Select Automatic Shut-Off Timer.
- Choose the desired duration.
- Save changes.
Note
Automatic Shut-Off Timer is not available on:
- Spotlight Cam Plus Battery
- Spotlight Cam Pro Battery
Configure Motion Zones for Lights
Motion Zones determine where motion activates lighting.
Edit Motion Zones
- Open Light Settings.
- Select Motion Zones for Lights.
- Turn individual zones On or Off.
- Save changes.
Adjust Light Sensitivity
Light Sensitivity controls how far away motion can trigger the lights.
Configure Light Sensitivity
- Open Light Settings.
- Select Light Sensitivity.
- Move the slider:
- Higher = Greater detection distance
- Lower = Shorter detection distance
- Save changes.
Adjust Light Brightness
Available on supported Floodlight and Spotlight models.
Configure Brightness
- Open Light Settings.
- Select Light Brightness.
- Adjust the brightness slider.
- Save changes.
Create Light Schedules
Light Schedules automatically turn lights on or off during selected times.
Create a Schedule
- Open the Ring app.
- Select Device Settings.
- Tap Light Settings.
- Select Light Schedules.
- Tap Add Schedule.
- Enter a Schedule Name.
- Under Controls, select:
- Keep Lights On
- Keep Lights Off
- Configure Start Time:
- Dusk
- Offset
- Custom Time
- Configure End Time.
- Select active days.
- Tap Save Schedule.
Edit Light Schedules
- Open Light Settings.
- Select Light Schedules.
- Tap the existing schedule.
- Make desired changes.
- Tap Save.
Delete Light Schedules
- Open Light Settings.
- Select Light Schedules.
- Select the schedule.
- Tap Remove This Schedule.
- Confirm deletion.
Enable or Disable a Schedule
- Open Light Settings.
- Select Light Schedules.
- Use the toggle switch beside the schedule.
- Save changes.
Troubleshooting Camera Lights
Lights Flicker
Possible causes:
- Power issues
- Device software issues
Recommended actions:
- Reboot the device.
- Power cycle the device.
- Verify the power source is stable.
- Test again.
Lights Turn On Unexpectedly
Floodlight Cams have a wide light detection field that may trigger lights outside the normal motion detection area.
Recommended actions:
- Lower Light Sensitivity.
- Adjust Motion Zones for Lights.
- Exclude unnecessary areas.
- Save changes.
Lights Are Too Dim
- Open Light Settings.
- Increase Light Brightness.
- Save changes.
- Test lighting performance.
Lights Do Not Turn On With Motion
Verify:
- It is dark enough for lights to activate.
- Motion-Activated Lights are enabled.
- Light Sensitivity is high enough.
- Motion Zones cover the desired area.
Adjust settings and retest.
Lights Are Unresponsive
- Verify the device is online.
- Test Live View.
- Test Motion Detection.
- Verify power source:
- Battery charged
- Hardwired power connected
- Reboot or power cycle the device.
If the issue continues:
- Factory reset the device.
- Reconnect the device in the Ring app.
- Retest functionality.
Expected Outcome
The customer successfully configures Ring camera light settings, motion-activated lighting, brightness levels, motion zones, and schedules, and resolves common camera light performance issues.
