How do I connect Alexa to my ecobee thermostat and use Alexa voice commands?

Answer:
Several ecobee thermostats include Alexa Built-in, allowing you to speak directly to Alexa through the thermostat.

Alexa Built-in Models:

• Smart Thermostat Premium
• SmartThermostat with Voice Control
• ecobee4

Alexa-Compatible Models (Require Separate Alexa Device):

• ecobee3
• ecobee3 lite
• Smart Thermostat Enhanced
• Smart Thermostat Lite
• Smart Thermostat Essential

These models can be controlled by Alexa but do not contain a microphone or speaker.

Linking Alexa to an ecobee Thermostat with Alexa Built-in

On the thermostat:

  1. Select Main Menu.
  2. Select the Microphone icon.
  3. Select Link Alexa.
  4. Scan the QR code using your phone.
  5. Complete pairing in the Alexa app.
  6. Say "Alexa, discover devices."

Once connected, the Alexa icon will appear on the thermostat home screen.

Enabling the ecobee Alexa Skill

Using the Alexa App:

  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Tap More.
  3. Tap Skills & Games.
  4. Tap the Search icon.
  5. Search for "ecobee."
  6. Enable the ecobee skill.
  7. Enable the ecobee Plus skill.
  8. Say "Alexa, discover devices."

Using the ecobee App:

  1. Open the ecobee app.
  2. Tap Account.
  3. Select ecobee Alexa Skill.
  4. Select Link ecobee skill.
  5. Select Link in the Amazon app.
  6. Enter your ecobee credentials.
  7. Select Got It.

Unlinking Alexa

Using the ecobee App:

  1. Open the ecobee app.
  2. Select your thermostat.
  3. Open the Menu.
  4. Scroll to Amazon Alexa.
  5. Select Unlink Alexa.

Turning Off Alexa Listening

On the thermostat:

  1. Select Main Menu.
  2. Select the Microphone icon.
  3. Select Turn Alexa Access Off.

For Smart Thermostat Premium:

  1. Select Main Menu.
  2. Select General Settings.
  3. Select Device Microphone.
  4. Disable the microphone.

Important Notes

• ecobee devices with Alexa Built-in only support the wake word "Alexa."
• Turning off the microphone disables Alexa voice control.
• Turning off the microphone also disables ecobee Smart Security Smoke Alarm Detection.
• Alexa-compatible models require an Amazon Alexa device with a microphone.

Troubleshooting

Issue:
Alexa cannot find my ecobee thermostat.

Solution:
Enable both the ecobee and ecobee Plus skills, then say "Alexa, discover devices."

Issue:
The thermostat displays a message to re-link Amazon Alexa.

Solution:
Re-enable and re-link the ecobee skill through the Alexa app or ecobee app, then run device discovery again.

Issue:
Alexa is no longer responding through the thermostat.

Solution:
Verify the thermostat microphone has not been disabled in the device settings.
