Google Nest – Fix Low Battery Warnings on Nest Thermostat

Issue

The Nest Thermostat may display a low battery warning during setup or normal operation.

The thermostat normally receives power from the HVAC system and uses two AAA batteries as backup power. If battery levels become low, the thermostat may display an alert on the device or in the Google Home app.

Fix a Low Battery Warning During Setup

If a low battery warning appears during initial installation:

1. Remove the thermostat display from the base.
2. Verify that the battery pull tab has been completely removed.
3. Remove both batteries.
4. Check for any remaining packaging material near the battery contacts.
5. Reinstall the batteries.
6. Confirm the batteries are properly seated and installed in the correct direction.
7. Reattach the thermostat display to the base until it clicks into place.

If the warning remains, replace the batteries with new AAA alkaline batteries.

Fix a Low Battery Warning After Setup

If a low battery warning appears after the thermostat has already been installed:

1. Remove the thermostat display.
2. Remove the batteries.
3. Install two new AAA alkaline batteries.
4. Reattach the display.

Repeated Low Battery Warnings

If low battery messages continue after replacing the batteries, the thermostat may not be receiving adequate power from the HVAC system.

Check the C Wire

A C wire provides continuous power to the thermostat.

If your system does not have a C wire, additional equipment or wiring changes may be required depending on the HVAC system type.

After installing fresh batteries:

1. Inspect the C wire connection.
2. Verify the wire is securely connected.
3. Confirm the HVAC system is supplying power properly.
4. Correct any wiring issues before replacing batteries again.

Replace the Batteries

Use only:

✓ AAA alkaline batteries

✓ New batteries from a reputable manufacturer

Steps

1. Remove the thermostat display from the base.
2. Remove both old batteries.
3. Install two new AAA alkaline batteries.
4. Reattach the display until it clicks into place.
5. Verify the low battery warning disappears.

Important Notes

• This article applies only to the Nest Thermostat model that uses replaceable AAA batteries.
• Nest Thermostat E and Nest Learning Thermostat models use rechargeable internal batteries and do not use replaceable AAA batteries.
• Persistent battery warnings may indicate a power delivery issue rather than a battery issue.
