Overview
A Google Account is required to create and use a Nest app account. If you already use Google services such as Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps, or Google Drive, you can use the same Google Account to sign in to the Nest app.
Once signed in, you can manage compatible Nest products, receive alerts, and access remote controls and automation features.
Before You Begin
You will need:
- A Google Account
- The Nest app installed on your phone or tablet
- Internet access
If you do not have a Google Account, create one before continuing.
Create a Nest App Account
- Download and install the Nest app.
- Open the Nest app.
- Tap Sign In with Google.
- Select your Google Account.
- If your account is not listed, tap Use Another Account.
- Review the permissions requested by Nest.
- Tap Allow.
- When asked if you have an existing Nest account that has not been migrated, select No.
- Review and accept the Terms of Service and Privacy Policies.
- Tap Continue.
- Follow the prompts to create your home and begin adding devices.
How to Check if You Already Have a Google Account
You may already have a Google Account if you use:
- Gmail
- YouTube
- Google Maps
- Google Drive
- Google Photos
Use your existing Google email address and password to sign in.
If you're unsure, attempt to sign in. Google will notify you if no account exists for that email address.

- Nest Cam Indoor
- Nest Cam Outdoor
- Nest Cam IQ Indoor
- Nest Cam IQ Outdoor
- Nest Doorbell (Wired 1st Gen)
An account is required for:
- Setup
- Notifications
- Video history
- Remote access
Nest Protect
An account is required for:
- Mobile alerts
- Remote monitoring
- Home automation features
Nest × Yale Lock
An account is required for:
- Remote lock and unlock
- Passcode management
- Guest access schedules
- Lock activity notifications
- Low battery alerts
Products That Use Google Home Instead
Newer Google Nest products are managed primarily through the Google Home app, including:
- Nest Cam (Battery)
- Nest Doorbell (Battery)
- Nest Thermostat
- Other newer Google Nest devices
Software Updates
All Nest products require an internet connection to receive software updates.
Most Nest products must also be linked to an account before connecting to Wi-Fi and receiving updates.
Troubleshooting
Unable to Sign In
- Verify your Google Account credentials.
- Check your internet connection.
- Update the Nest app to the latest version.
Account Not Found
If Google reports that no account exists, create a new Google Account before attempting setup again.
Device Will Not Add to Account
Verify the device is compatible with the Nest app and has not already been linked to another account.
