Ring Live View Picture-in-Picture - Setup and Usage

Purpose

Use this procedure when a customer wants to continue viewing Ring Live View while using other applications on their mobile device.

Customer Symptoms

Customer wants to:

  • Watch Live View while using other apps
  • Keep Ring video visible outside the Ring app
  • Enable Picture-in-Picture mode
  • Use multitasking while monitoring a Ring device
  • Understand Picture-in-Picture limitations

What Is Live View Picture-in-Picture?

Live View Picture-in-Picture (PiP) allows Live View video to remain visible in a floating window after leaving the Ring app.

This feature requires:

  • A compatible Ring subscription
  • A compatible mobile device
  • Picture-in-Picture enabled on the mobile device

Requirements

Before using Picture-in-Picture:

  • Verify Live View is functioning normally.
  • Verify the Ring subscription supports the feature.
  • Verify Picture-in-Picture is enabled in the mobile device settings.

Mobile Device Settings

iPhone:

  • Verify Picture-in-Picture is enabled in iOS settings.

Android:

  • Verify Picture-in-Picture permissions are enabled according to the device manufacturer's instructions.

Configuration Steps

Start Picture-in-Picture Mode

  1. Open the Ring app.
  2. Start Live View on a compatible device.
  3. Leave the Ring app while Live View is active.
  4. Verify the video appears in a floating Picture-in-Picture window.

Resize the Picture-in-Picture Window

To adjust the window size:

  • Double tap the video window.
  • Pinch inward to reduce the size.
  • Spread two fingers outward to enlarge the window.

Close Picture-in-Picture

  1. Tap the Picture-in-Picture window.
  2. Select the X icon.
  3. Confirm the window closes.

Returning to Full Live View

To access Live View controls:

  1. Tap the Picture-in-Picture window.
  2. Select Full Screen.
  3. Return to the Ring app.

Feature Limitations

While using Picture-in-Picture:

  • Live View controls may not be available.
  • Lights, sirens, and other device controls require returning to the full Ring app.
  • Certain advanced Live View features may not be accessible until Full Screen mode is restored.

Troubleshooting Steps

Picture-in-Picture Not Starting

  1. Verify the subscription supports the feature.
  2. Verify Picture-in-Picture is enabled on the mobile device.
  3. Update the Ring app.
  4. Restart Live View.
  5. Restart the mobile device if necessary.

Floating Window Disappears

  1. Restart Live View.
  2. Verify the Ring app remains updated.
  3. Verify Picture-in-Picture permissions remain enabled.
  4. Test again.

Expected Outcome

Customer can continue watching Ring Live View in a floating window while using other applications on their mobile device and return to full Ring controls when needed.
