Ecobee Thermostat - Enable Auto Heat/Cool Mode

Purpose

Use this procedure when a customer wants to enable Auto Heat/Cool mode so the Ecobee thermostat automatically switches between heating and cooling to maintain a comfortable temperature.

Customer Symptoms

Customer wants to:

  • Enable Auto mode
  • Automatically switch between heating and cooling
  • Maintain a temperature range
  • Configure heating and cooling setpoints
  • Adjust Heat/Cool temperature delta
  • Use Auto mode from the thermostat or app

Understanding Auto Heat/Cool

Auto Heat/Cool allows the thermostat to automatically determine whether heating or cooling is needed.

The thermostat maintains two temperature setpoints:

  • Heating Setpoint (Orange)
  • Cooling Setpoint (Blue)

When room temperature rises above the cooling setpoint, cooling activates.

When room temperature falls below the heating setpoint, heating activates.

Enable Auto Heat/Cool

Ecobee Smart Thermostat

  1. Open the Main Menu.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Installation Settings.
  4. Select Thresholds.
  5. Select Auto Heat/Cool.
  6. Choose Enable.

Ecobee Smart Thermostat Lite and Essential

  1. Open the Main Menu.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Installation Settings.
  4. Select Thresholds.
  5. Select Auto Heat/Cool.
  6. Choose Enable.

Activate Auto Mode

After Auto Heat/Cool is enabled:

On the Thermostat

  1. Return to the Home Screen.
  2. Tap the System Mode icon.
  3. Select Auto.

In the Ecobee App

  1. Open the Ecobee app.
  2. Select the thermostat.
  3. Tap System Mode.
  4. Select Auto.

Adjust Heat/Cool Minimum Delta

The Heat/Cool Delta determines the minimum temperature difference between the heating and cooling setpoints.

Default Setting

  • 5°F (2.8°C)

Adjustable Range

  • Minimum: 2°F (1.1°C)
  • Maximum: 10°F (5.5°C)

Change Heat/Cool Delta

  1. Open the Main Menu.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Installation Settings.
  4. Select Thresholds.
  5. Select Heat/Cool Min Delta.
  6. Adjust the desired value.
  7. Save changes.

Troubleshooting

Auto Mode Not Available

  1. Verify Auto Heat/Cool is enabled.
  2. Confirm the HVAC system supports both heating and cooling.
  3. Restart the thermostat.
  4. Check installation settings.

Heating and Cooling Running Too Often

  1. Increase the Heat/Cool Minimum Delta.
  2. Review temperature setpoints.
  3. Verify HVAC equipment is operating properly.

Thermostat Not Switching Modes

  1. Verify Auto mode is selected.
  2. Confirm both heating and cooling setpoints are configured.
  3. Check system status and equipment settings.

Expected Outcome

The Ecobee thermostat automatically switches between heating and cooling based on the configured temperature range, maintaining comfort without requiring manual mode changes.
