Purpose
Use this procedure when a customer is installing and setting up a new Ecobee thermostat for the first time.
Customer Symptoms
Customer wants to:
- Install a new Ecobee thermostat
- Connect Ecobee to Wi-Fi
- Create or sign into an Ecobee account
- Complete thermostat setup
- Register the thermostat
- Configure initial settings
- Pair the thermostat with the Ecobee app
Before You Begin
Verify the customer has:
- Installed the thermostat according to Ecobee wiring instructions
- Restored power to the HVAC system
- A working Wi-Fi network
- Wi-Fi network name and password
- An Ecobee account or email address for registration
- The Ecobee app installed on their mobile device
Power On the Thermostat
- Restore power to the HVAC system.
- Wait for the Ecobee thermostat to start.
- Verify the thermostat display powers on.
- Follow the on-screen setup prompts.
Connect to Wi-Fi
- Select the desired Wi-Fi network.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password.
- Select Connect.
- Wait for the thermostat to establish an internet connection.
Sign In or Create an Ecobee Account
- Follow the on-screen prompts.
- Sign in to an existing Ecobee account or create a new account.
- Verify account information.
- Complete registration.
Register the Thermostat
- Open the Ecobee app.
- Sign in to the Ecobee account.
- Select Add Device.
- Follow the prompts to pair the thermostat.
- Confirm the thermostat appears in the account.
Configure Initial Settings
Review and configure:
- Home address
- Time zone
- Temperature units (Fahrenheit or Celsius)
- Heating preferences
- Cooling preferences
- Fan settings
- Schedule preferences
Test System Operation
Test Heating
- Set the thermostat to Heat Mode.
- Increase the temperature above room temperature.
- Verify heating equipment starts.
Test Cooling
- Set the thermostat to Cool Mode.
- Lower the temperature below room temperature.
- Verify cooling equipment starts.
Test Fan
- Turn the fan on manually.
- Verify airflow is present.
Troubleshooting
Thermostat Will Not Power On
- Verify HVAC breaker is on.
- Verify thermostat wiring is secure.
- Confirm compatible HVAC equipment.
- Check fuse or transformer if applicable.
Cannot Connect to Wi-Fi
- Verify Wi-Fi password.
- Move closer to the router.
- Restart the router.
- Restart the thermostat.
- Attempt connection again.
Thermostat Not Appearing in App
- Verify the thermostat is online.
- Verify account login credentials.
- Refresh the Ecobee app.
- Remove and re-add the thermostat if necessary.
Heating or Cooling Not Working
- Verify HVAC mode selection.
- Review wiring connections.
- Confirm HVAC equipment is operational.
- Review installation settings.
Expected Outcome
The Ecobee thermostat is successfully connected to Wi-Fi, registered to the customer's Ecobee account, paired with the Ecobee app, and fully operational for heating, cooling, and scheduling functions.
