Purpose
Use this procedure when a customer reports that their Ecobee thermostat is offline, cannot connect to Wi-Fi, or is not communicating with the Ecobee app.
Customer Symptoms
Customer wants to:
- Reconnect Ecobee to Wi-Fi
- Fix an offline thermostat
- Restore app connectivity
- Connect to a new Wi-Fi network
- Troubleshoot internet connection issues
- Test thermostat network connectivity
Verify the Thermostat Has Power
Before troubleshooting Wi-Fi:
- Verify the thermostat screen is powered on.
- If the screen is blank, troubleshoot thermostat power issues first.
If the screen is active but the thermostat appears offline in the Ecobee app, continue with Wi-Fi troubleshooting.
Restart Network Equipment
- Restart the internet router.
- Restart any Wi-Fi extenders or mesh devices.
- Wait until internet service is restored on another device.
- Confirm phones or computers can access the internet.
Reboot the Ecobee Thermostat
- Pull the thermostat straight off the wall mounting plate.
- Leave it disconnected for 30 seconds.
- Reattach the thermostat to the wall plate.
- Allow the thermostat to fully reboot.
Reconnect to Wi-Fi
Ecobee Smart Thermostat
- Open the Main Menu.
- Select Settings.
- Select Wi-Fi.
- Select Wi-Fi Network.
- Choose the desired network.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password.
- Complete the connection process.
Ecobee Smart Thermostat Lite and Essential
- Open the Main Menu.
- Select Settings.
- Select Wi-Fi.
- Select Wi-Fi Network.
- Select the desired network.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password.
- Connect.
Record Any Error Messages
If an error occurs:
- Note the exact error message.
- Note where it appears during the connection process.
- Use the error details for additional troubleshooting.
Test Using a Mobile Hotspot
If the thermostat still cannot connect:
- Enable a mobile hotspot on a smartphone.
- Reboot the thermostat.
- Attempt to connect the thermostat to the hotspot.
If Hotspot Connection Works
The issue is likely related to:
- Router settings
- Firewall settings
- Wi-Fi configuration
- ISP equipment
If Hotspot Connection Fails
The thermostat may require additional troubleshooting or support.
Connect to an iPhone Hotspot
- Open iPhone Settings.
- Navigate to General > About > Name.
- Remove special characters from the phone name if present.
- Open Personal Hotspot.
- Enable Maximize Compatibility.
- Turn on Personal Hotspot.
- Reboot the Ecobee thermostat.
- Select the hotspot from available Wi-Fi networks.
- Connect.
Connect to an Android Hotspot
- Enable Mobile Hotspot on the Android device.
- Reboot the Ecobee thermostat.
- Open Wi-Fi settings on the thermostat.
- Select the hotspot network.
- Enter the hotspot password.
- Connect.

- Restart the router.
- Refresh available networks.
Incorrect Password Errors
- Re-enter the Wi-Fi password carefully.
- Verify capitalization and special characters.
- Test the password using another device.
App Shows Offline After Successful Connection
- Allow several minutes for synchronization.
- Refresh the Ecobee app.
- Sign out and back into the app.
- Verify the thermostat shows as connected under Wi-Fi settings.
Expected Outcome
The Ecobee thermostat successfully reconnects to Wi-Fi, appears online in the Ecobee app, and resumes normal remote control and monitoring functions.
