Purpose

Use this procedure when an Ecobee thermostat repeatedly disconnects from Wi-Fi, frequently appears offline in the app, or experiences intermittent connectivity issues.

Customer Symptoms

Customer reports:

  • Thermostat frequently disconnects from Wi-Fi
  • Ecobee repeatedly shows offline in the app
  • Intermittent internet connectivity
  • Delayed app updates
  • Thermostat reconnects and disconnects repeatedly

Verify Thermostat Power

Important:

If the thermostat screen is blank when showing offline in the app, this is not a Wi-Fi issue. Troubleshoot thermostat power first.

Check Wi-Fi Signal Strength

Low signal strength can cause frequent disconnects.

On Ecobee Smart Thermostats

  1. Go to Main Menu.
  2. Select General.
  3. Select About.
  4. Select Wi-Fi.
  5. Review signal strength.

On Smart Thermostat Lite and Essential

  1. Go to Main Menu.
  2. Select About.
  3. Select Wi-Fi.
  4. Review signal strength.

Recommended Signal Strength

  • 75% or higher recommended
  • Below 75% may cause connection issues

If signal strength is low:

  • Move the router closer to the thermostat.
  • Install a Wi-Fi extender.
  • Improve Wi-Fi coverage near the thermostat.

Verify Router Settings

Confirm the router is:

  • Powered on
  • Broadcasting Wi-Fi properly
  • Providing internet access

Recommended Network Band

Most Ecobee thermostats support:

  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi

Models Supporting 5 GHz

  • Smart Thermostat with Voice Control
  • Smart Thermostat Premium
  • Smart Thermostat Enhanced

Recommended Router Configuration

If disconnects continue, review the following router settings.

Disable MAC Address Filtering

MAC filtering may block or interrupt thermostat communication.

Lower Firewall Security

Overly restrictive firewall settings may interfere with cloud connectivity.

Disable Band Steering

Disable automatic switching between:

  • 2.4 GHz
  • 5 GHz

Create separate Wi-Fi network names if possible.

Separate Multiple Access Points

If using:

  • Mesh systems
  • Multiple routers
  • Multiple access points

Consider creating a dedicated 2.4 GHz network with its own SSID.

Verify Encryption Type

Supported:

  • WPA
  • WPA2

Not Supported:

  • TKIP encryption

Use WPA2 whenever possible.

Additional Troubleshooting

Restart Router

  1. Unplug router power.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Restore power.
  4. Allow internet service to fully return.

Reboot Thermostat

  1. Remove thermostat from wall plate.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Reattach thermostat.
  4. Allow thermostat to restart.

Test Connectivity

  1. Monitor thermostat connection status.
  2. Confirm thermostat remains online.
  3. Verify app updates correctly.

When to Escalate

Escalate if:

  • Signal strength is strong
  • Router settings are verified
  • Disconnects continue after rebooting
  • Thermostat repeatedly drops connection multiple times daily

Expected Outcome

The Ecobee thermostat maintains a stable Wi-Fi connection, remains online in the Ecobee app, and no longer disconnects unexpectedly.
