Ecobee Thermostat - Create and Edit Comfort Settings

Purpose

Use this procedure when a customer wants to create, edit, or customize Comfort Settings on an Ecobee thermostat.

Customer Symptoms

Customer wants to:

  • Adjust Home temperatures
  • Adjust Away temperatures
  • Adjust Sleep temperatures
  • Create a custom Comfort Setting
  • Change heating and cooling setpoints
  • Change fan behavior
  • Customize thermostat schedules
  • Improve comfort or energy savings

Understanding Comfort Settings

Ecobee schedules are built using:

  • Activities
  • Comfort Settings

Activities determine when a Comfort Setting runs.

Comfort Settings determine:

  • Heating temperature
  • Cooling temperature
  • Fan behavior
  • Occupancy preference

Default Comfort Settings

Every Ecobee thermostat includes:

  • Home
  • Away
  • Sleep

Important Information

During Away activities or Custom Comfort Settings where:

"Someone is usually Away"

is selected, Ecobee applies an additional:

  • 1°F differential
  • 0.6°C differential

to improve energy savings before heating or cooling begins.

Edit Existing Comfort Settings

Using the Ecobee App

  1. Open the Ecobee app.
  2. Tap Home.
  3. Select the thermostat.
  4. Tap Menu.
  5. Tap Comfort Settings.
  6. Select the Comfort Setting you want to edit.
  7. Adjust:
    • Heating setpoint
    • Cooling setpoint
    • Fan settings
  8. Tap Save.

Using the Thermostat

  1. Open Main Menu.
  2. Tap Comfort Settings.
  3. Select the Comfort Setting you want to modify.
  4. Adjust:
    • Heating setpoint
    • Cooling setpoint
    • Fan settings
  5. Tap Save.

Smart Thermostat Lite and Essential

  1. Open Main Menu.
  2. Tap Comfort Settings.
  3. Select the Comfort Setting.
  4. Adjust:
    • Heating setpoint
    • Cooling setpoint
    • Fan settings
  5. Tap Save.

Create a New Comfort Setting

Using the Ecobee App

  1. Open the Ecobee app.
  2. Tap Home.
  3. Select the thermostat.
  4. Tap Menu.
  5. Tap Comfort Settings.
  6. Tap the Plus (+) icon.
  7. Enter a name for the new Comfort Setting.
  8. Configure:
    • Heating setpoint
    • Cooling setpoint
    • Fan settings
  9. Select one of the following:
    • Someone is usually Home
    • Someone is usually Away
  10. Tap Save.

Recommended Comfort Setting Examples

Home

  • Comfortable daytime temperatures
  • Normal fan operation

Away

  • Wider temperature range
  • Reduced energy usage

Sleep

  • Cooler sleeping temperatures
  • Quiet fan operation

Troubleshooting

Comfort Setting Not Following Schedule

  1. Verify the Comfort Setting is assigned to a scheduled Activity.
  2. Check current System Mode.
  3. Review any active Holds or Vacation settings.

Changes Not Saving

  1. Verify internet connectivity.
  2. Update the Ecobee app.
  3. Retry saving the settings.

Temperatures Seem Different Than Expected

  1. Verify heating and cooling setpoints.
  2. Check if "Someone is usually Away" is selected.
  3. Review any active schedule overrides.

Expected Outcome

The Comfort Setting is successfully created or updated, allowing the thermostat to automatically manage temperature and fan settings based on the customer's schedule and preferences.
