Purpose
Use this procedure when a customer wants to adjust fan runtime, create a fan hold, modify fan behavior in Comfort Settings, or change fan control settings on an Ecobee thermostat.
Customer Symptoms
Customer wants to:
- Run the fan more often
- Improve air circulation
- Create a fan hold
- Run the fan continuously
- Change fan runtime settings
- Adjust fan settings in Comfort Settings
- Change fan control during heating cycles
- Improve airflow throughout the home
Understanding Fan Settings
Ecobee thermostats provide several ways to control the HVAC fan:
- Fan Minimum Runtime
- Fan Hold
- Comfort Setting Fan Modes
- Fan Control in Heat Mode
Each setting affects how and when the fan operates.
Fan Minimum Runtime
Fan Minimum Runtime allows the customer to set the minimum amount of time the fan operates each hour.
This feature:
- Improves air circulation
- Helps balance temperatures throughout the home
- Runs regardless of the selected System Mode
Adjust Fan Minimum Runtime on the Thermostat
Ecobee Smart Thermostats
- Open Main Menu.
- Select Fan.
- Select Auto.
- Choose the desired runtime.
Smart Thermostat Lite and Essential
- Open Main Menu.
- Select Fan Mode.
- Select Auto.
- Choose the desired runtime.
Adjust Fan Minimum Runtime in the Ecobee App
- Open the Ecobee app.
- Select the thermostat.
- Tap Menu.
- Select System.
- Select Fan.
- Choose the desired runtime.
- Exit to save.
Important Notes
- Existing Holds must be cancelled before Fan Minimum Runtime changes take effect.
- After updating the setting, a new Hold can be created.
- Runtime selections above 5 minutes are distributed evenly throughout the hour.
Fan Hold
Fan Hold forces the fan to run continuously for a specified period or indefinitely.
This operates regardless of the selected System Mode.
Create a Fan Hold on the Thermostat
Ecobee Smart Thermostats
- Open Main Menu.
- Select Fan.
- Select On.
- Choose the desired Fan Hold duration.
Smart Thermostat Lite and Essential
- Open Main Menu.
- Select Fan Mode.
- Select On.
- Select the desired Fan Hold duration.
Create a Fan Hold in the Ecobee App
- Open the Ecobee app.
- Select the thermostat.
- Tap the toggle control.
- Select Set Fan Hold.
- Choose the desired hold duration.
Important Notes
If System Mode is set to Off:
- Fan Holds remain active.
- Active Holds may not be visible.
- To view or cancel a Hold, change System Mode to Heat, Cool, Auto, or Aux.
Fan Settings in Comfort Settings
Each Comfort Setting can have its own fan behavior.
Fan Mode Options
Fan On
When Fan On is selected:
- Fan runs continuously
- Operates throughout the Comfort Setting
- Available in Heat, Cool, Auto, and Aux modes
Fan Auto
When Fan Auto is selected:
- Fan follows Fan Minimum Runtime settings
- Fan operates only as needed
Change Fan Settings in the Ecobee App
- Open the Ecobee app.
- Select the thermostat.
- Tap Menu.
- Select Comfort Settings.
- Select a Comfort Setting.
- Change Fan Mode to:
- On
- Auto
- Save changes.

- Open Main Menu.
- Select Comfort Settings.
- Select a Comfort Setting.
- Select Fan Settings.
- Choose:
- On
- Auto
- Save changes.
Smart Thermostat Lite and Essential
- Open Main Menu.
- Select Comfort Settings.
- Select a Comfort Setting.
- Select Fan Settings.
- Choose:
- On
- Auto
- Save changes.
Fan Control in Heat Mode
This setting determines who controls the fan during heating cycles.
Ecobee Thermostat Control
When set to Ecobee:
- Fan starts immediately when heating begins.
- Fan stops immediately when heating ends.
HVAC Equipment Control
When set to HVAC:
- Furnace controls fan operation.
- Fan may start after a short delay.
- Recommended for variable-speed furnaces.

- Open Main Menu.
- Select Settings.
- Select Installation Settings.
- Select Equipment.
- Select Furnace.
- Select Fan Control in Heat Mode.
- Choose:

- Open Main Menu.
- Select Settings.
- Select Installation Settings.
- Select Equipment.
- Select Furnace.
- Select Fan Control in Heat Mode.

Troubleshooting
Fan Not Running Enough
- Increase Fan Minimum Runtime.
- Verify Fan Mode is set correctly.
- Check Comfort Settings.
Fan Runs Constantly
- Check for an active Fan Hold.
- Verify Comfort Setting Fan Mode is not set to On.
- Review Fan Minimum Runtime settings.
Fan Hold Cannot Be Removed
- Change System Mode from Off to another mode.
- Locate the active Hold.
- Cancel the Hold.
Expected Outcome
The Ecobee thermostat fan operates according to the customer's preferred runtime, circulation, Comfort Settings, and heating configuration.
