Some thermostat manufacturers use the * (Star), U, U1, or U2 terminals for specialized HVAC functions.
These terminals may control:

Before installing an ecobee thermostat, you must determine what function the wire controls.
Google Nest and Wyze * (Star) Terminal
The * (Star) terminal on Nest and Wyze thermostats may control:

My * (Star) Wire Controls a Humidifier or Dehumidifier
During installation:
- Power off the HVAC system.
- Connect the wire to ACC+ on the ecobee thermostat.

• ecobee3 lite does not support HVAC accessories.

The wire is used for multi-speed fan control.
