Overview

Google Home allows multiple people to share access to a home and its connected devices. Household members can be assigned different permission levels based on the amount of control they need.

There are two primary access levels:

  • Admin
  • Member

Access Levels

Admin

Admins have full control of the home.

Admins can:

✓ Add or remove household members

✓ Add or remove devices

✓ Manage automations

✓ Manage subscriptions

✓ View activity history

✓ Change home settings

✓ Delete the home

Member

Members can use devices and services within the home.

Additional permissions can be granted by an Admin.

Possible permissions include:

  • Activity Access
  • Settings Access

Without these permissions, Members have limited control over devices and home settings.


Invite Someone to a Home

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap your Profile Picture.
  3. Tap Switch Home if necessary.
  4. Select the desired home.
  5. Tap Add.
  6. Tap Home Member.
  7. Enter the person's email address.
  8. Select either:
    • Admin
    • Member
  9. Send the invitation.

The invited user receives an email with instructions to join the home.


Accept a Home Invitation

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap your Profile Picture.
  3. Tap Inbox.
  4. Open the invitation.
  5. Review access permissions.
  6. Tap Agree & Join.

After joining, the user can configure personal settings such as Voice Match and Face Match.


Activity Permission

When enabled, Members can:

✓ View camera history

✓ View lock activity

✓ View presence history

✓ View automation activity

✓ View subscription-related events

When enabled, Members can:

✓ Manage device settings

✓ Modify home settings

✓ Manage automations

Remove Yourself from a Home

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap your Profile Picture.
  3. Tap Home Settings.
  4. Select Leave This Home.
  5. Confirm the action.

Important

Leaving a home removes access to:

  • Connected devices
  • Home settings
  • Shared services
  • Subscription features

Remove Another Household Member

Admin access required.

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap Profile Picture.
  3. Tap Home Settings.
  4. Select the member to remove.
  5. Tap Remove This Person.
  6. Confirm the action.

The removed user immediately loses access to devices and services associated with the home.


Child Accounts

Child accounts are added as Members and may have additional restrictions.

Depending on parental controls and supervision settings, children may not be able to:

  • Invite other users
  • Manage household settings
  • Manage Face Match libraries
  • Modify certain voice assistant settings

Best Practices

✓ Limit Admin access to trusted users.

✓ Review Member permissions regularly.

✓ Use Activity permissions only when needed.

✓ Use Settings permissions only when necessary.

✓ Remove users who no longer need access.
