Overview
You can remove Nest and Google devices from your account when transferring ownership, moving, replacing equipment, or troubleshooting setup issues.
Important: Remove the device from the same app used during the original setup.
- Devices set up in the Google Home app should be removed from the Google Home app.
- Devices set up in the Nest app should be removed from the Nest app.
- Matter-enabled devices can be removed through the Google Home app.
- Non-Matter devices may need to be removed through the manufacturer's app.
Before You Remove a Device
Removing a device may:
- Delete stored history and recordings.
- Remove app access and notifications.
- Require a factory reset before the device can be used again.
- Disconnect automations and integrations.
Remove a Device from the Google Home App
- Open the Google Home app.
- Select the device.
- Tap and hold the device tile.
- Tap Settings.
- Select Remove Device.
- Confirm removal.
If you are permanently transferring ownership or no longer using the device, perform a factory reset after removal.
Remove a Device from the Nest App
- Open the Nest app.
- Select the home containing the device.
- Tap Settings.
- Select the device.
- Tap Remove [Device Name].
- Confirm removal.
- Perform a factory reset if required.
Product-Specific Information
Nest Protect
After removal:
- Smoke and carbon monoxide detection still works.
- Alarm sounds still function.
However:
- No app notifications.
- No remote status monitoring.
- No settings management.
- No software updates.
A factory reset is required before adding the device again.
Nest Cameras and Doorbells
Important: Wait until the camera status light indicates removal is complete before unplugging the device.
After removal:
- Recorded video history is permanently deleted.
- The device must be set up again before reuse.
Subscriptions can still be canceled after device removal.
Nest × Yale Lock
After removal:
You can still:
- Use existing passcodes.
- Lock and unlock manually from inside the home.
You cannot:
- Create or edit passcodes in the app.
- Remotely lock or unlock the door.
- Receive lock notifications.
- Monitor lock activity.
- Adjust lock settings.
A factory reset clears all passcodes and prepares the lock for a new setup.
Nest Thermostat
After removal:
- Remote control is disabled.
- Device settings are removed from your account.
- The thermostat must be set up again before reuse.
Factory reset may be required depending on the situation.
Google Nest Hub Max
After removal:
- Nest Cam video history is deleted (except saved clips).
- Voice Assistant features stop working.
- Calendar events and reminders are removed.
- Media playback is unavailable.
- Camera functions are disabled.
The device must be set up again before use.
Recommended Next Step
If you are giving the device to another person, selling your home, or permanently removing the device:
- Remove the device from your account.
- Perform a factory reset.
- Verify the device is ready for a new owner.
