Ecobee – What is Smart Recovery?

Overview

Smart Recovery automatically starts heating or cooling before a scheduled Comfort Setting begins so your home reaches the desired temperature by the scheduled start time.

Instead of waiting until the scheduled time to begin heating or cooling, Smart Recovery calculates how long your home typically takes to reach the target temperature and starts the system early when needed.

How Smart Recovery Works

Smart Recovery uses a learning algorithm that studies your home's heating and cooling performance over time.

As the thermostat gathers more data, it becomes more accurate at determining:

• How quickly your home heats up
• How quickly your home cools down
• When heating or cooling should begin to reach the desired temperature on schedule

The longer the thermostat is installed, the more accurate Smart Recovery becomes.

Enable or Disable Smart Recovery

On Smart Thermostat Premium or Enhanced

1. Select Main Menu.
2. Select General Settings.
3. Select Preferences.
4. Select:
   • Cooling Smart Recovery
   • Heating Smart Recovery
5. Choose Enable or Disable.

On Smart Thermostat Lite or Essential

1. Select Main Menu.
2. Select Preferences.
3. Select:
   • Cooling Smart Recovery
   • Heating Smart Recovery
4. Choose Enable or Disable.

Important Notes

App Control Not Available

Smart Recovery cannot be enabled or disabled through the ecobee app.

This setting must be changed directly on the thermostat.

Hold Settings Affect Smart Recovery

Smart Recovery will not run if an indefinite Hold is active.

Examples include:

• Comfort Setting Hold
• Hold Action set to "Until I Change It"

Smart Recovery can still operate when Hold Action is set to:

• Until Next Scheduled Activity
• Until Next Scheduled Period

How to Confirm Smart Recovery is Running

Cooling Mode

When Smart Recovery is active for cooling, you may see:

• Blue snowflake icon
• Blue perimeter line

These indicators may appear even if the current temperature is already below the scheduled cooling setpoint.

Heating Mode

When Smart Recovery is active for heating, you may see:

• Orange flame icon
• Orange perimeter line

These indicators may appear even if the current temperature is already above the scheduled heating setpoint.

View Smart Recovery History

You can verify previous Smart Recovery events through System Monitor.

1. Open System Monitor.
2. Download thermostat data as a CSV file.
3. Review the Calendar Events column.

Historical Smart Recovery events will be listed within the exported data.
